Hiking Tour in Tusheti – Duration: three days, including time on the road. Overnights in guesthouses. On the tour, you will see Alaverdi Cathedral. You will also visit two Tushetian valleys: Chagma and Pirikiti.

Tusheti is a historic region of Georgia. Administratively, Tusheti is located in Kakheti. Therefore, it is under environmental protection as one of the Tusheti Protected Areas. Most importantly, it is on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list.

The largest village in Tusheti is Omalo. There are 4 main communities in Tusheti:

  • Tsova
  • Gometsari 
  • Pirikiti 
  • Chaghma

Tusheti is a place that has kept the spirit of the past. Here time seems to stand still. The vast majority of inhabitants are shepherds. However, these people are friendship-minded; they love to talk with strangers. Moreover, they like to absorb the news of the world and share local culture.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tbilisi – Alaverdi – Lower Omalo – Shenako – Diklo – Pichekhi Castles
Departure from Tbilisi. On the way, we will visit Alaverdi Monastery. It will take about 6-7 hours to travel to Tusheti. The road is so beautiful that you will not get bored. In the middle of the road, we will have lunch. After a short break, we’ll leave to visit villages Shenako and Diklo. In Diklo we’ll walk to Pichekhi Castles, the main fortress on the border of Dagestan, which left one of the saddest histories.
Return to the guesthouse (Lunch/Dinner)

Driving distance: 230 km. Time: 8 hours. Walking distance: 2 km. Time: 2 hours. Minimal altitude: 280 m. Maximal altitude: 2867 m.
Day 2: Hiking on Sakheo range (3050m)
After Breakfast, we will start hiking and go to the Sakheo range. (3050m) Here you will have picturesque views of both: Pirikiti and Gometsari Valley. From the top of the range, you will see villages: Bochorna, Dartlo, Kvavlo, and Chesho. This hiking route is the most beautiful from the middle of June until the middle of July, with flowering Rhododendrons and a small lake on the top of the range.
Return to the guesthouse (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Hiking distance 16 km; Minimal altitude: 1900 m; Maximal altitude: 3050m
Day 3: Keselo castles - Museum in Lower Omalo - Tbilisi
9 am breakfast.
Next, you will visit Keselo Castels and the museum in Lower Omalo.
After all, we’ll arrive back in Tbilisi. Here hiking tour in Tusheti finishes. (Breakfast/Lunch)

Generally, the road to Tusheti opens at the end of May and the season lasts until the end of October.

In Tusheti, guesthouses are clean and cozy places with simple facilities. Most of them have private bathrooms.
What kind of clothes do we need?
Raincoat, pants for trekking, worm sweater, trekking boots, cap, sun protection cream, shorts, t-shirt.
Is there any pharmacy in Tusheti?
In Tusheti there is no pharmacy. So if someone has a specific disease and needs a special drug, then he has to buy in Tbilisi or must have it with him.
What if I have special diet?
A vegetarian option is available. If you have any kind of allergy or intolerance, let us know in advance.
What about meals?
During the hiking tour, full board meals are included. First and last day you will have breakfast and lunch only.
What about payment?
An invoice will be sent to you after the tour is confirmed. You pay a 10% commission upfront to our PayPal account. The fee is refunded only if the tour is canceled for our reasons or due to natural disasters. Otherwise, the commission is not refundable.
You pay the remaining 90% at the start of the tour.
