City tour in Tbilisi by car covers most highlights of the city. The first destination of the City tour in Tbilisi is the modern Trinity cathedral, built-in 1995 – 2004 in celebration of 2000 years from Jesus’ birth and 1500 years of Georgian church autocephaly. It’s the biggest church in Georgia – its height from bottom to top is 86,1 meters. Trinity is a whole complex, where are 9 churches, and other buildings, like theological seminary, museum, conference hall, etc. The complex is located on the hill Elia. From here is a good view over the whole city.
The next stop is at Metekhi plateau. You will have a perfect panoramic view of the old city – Narikala fortress, Bath district, Meidan, Kala district, Betlemi district. Here also stands the statue of king Vakhang Gorgasali – founder of Tbilisi.
Narikala fortress is an ancient fortress on the hill with an impressive view. The fortress is built on a steep hill, between the sulfur baths and the botanical garden, and consists of two walled sections. On the lower court, there is the recently restored St Nicholas church. From here walk to Bath district, and pass Tbilisi mosque.
Abanotubani is the district of natural hot sulfide baths. Abanotubani is an important historic part of the city, where according to a legendary king of Iberia, Vakhtang Gorgasali’s falcon fell, leading to a discovery of the hot springs and, subsequently, to the founding of new capital.
Walk to Meidan – the center of old Tbilisi and walk towards trade and craft district of the city – in Tbilisi were 18 Karavan-‘sarays’ – kind of hotel for traveler traders. Here they were living and on the first floor selling their goods. Such Karavan-‘Sarais’ – in Georgian Karvasla – were spread up in the whole middle east. They are predecessors of modern trade malls. Tourists will see a couple of them in modern Shardeni street and its surroundings. Here several surprises are expecting tourists.
Sioni Cathedral is situated in historic Sionis Kucha (Sioni Street) in downtown Tbilisi, with its eastern facade fronting the right embankment of the Mtkvari River, built in the 5th century. Since then, it has been destroyed by foreign invaders and reconstructed several times. The current church is based on a 12th-century version with some changes from the 17th to 19th centuries. Drive to the National Art Museum, where is the National Treasury exhibition.
After visiting the museum tourists will drive to one of the central avenues of the city, named Baratashvili avenue. Here are kept remains of the city walls. Anchiskhati church of VI century, one of the oldest buildings of Tbilisi. Tower clock – a modern bizarre tower built by the head of puppet theater – Rezo Gabriadze became a favorite attraction for local people and tourists. The new bridge of Peace is modern walking bridge in the heart of the old part of the city. It is a great place to take photos.
Liberty square – the central square of the modern city. Statue of st. George in the center and buildings of XIX and XX centuries around. Rustaveli avenue – the heart of modern Tbilisi. Most of the avenue is built in the second half of the XIX century. But there are buildings of the XX and XIX centuries too. Here is located Opera house, Several theaters, many cafes, and shops. Avenue ends at Rustaveli square.
